Solid Waste Committee Meeting Minutes
2/20/2024
DRAFT

Attending: Kelly Marshal, Kevin St. John, Joanne Santospago

Old Business:
  1. 2008 Master PlanDiscussion: A copy was given to those present. The ideas that were shared were that we definitely want input from Jamie, liason between Transfer Station and Selecboard and Transfer Station staff. Input from the staff has already been shared with the SWC and Selctboard regarding necessary projects will may be included in the plan.
  2. Feedback from other Towns about their Transfer Stations:
Kevin contacted New Boston
Run as an Enterprise
  • Solid Waste Committee-Jerry (Full time employee) and 3 community members and a Selecboard member
  • Truck scale
  • Store #1 and #2 plastics
  • Happy to give us tour
  • Permit is complete
  • Profits are used at the transfer station

Joanne contacted Greenfield-
  • Caleb Hall, fulltime transfer station employee; transfer station only open 24 hours; spends off time sorting, bailing, finding best market prices
  • 1 part time employee
  • No 3-5 year plan
  • No Solid Waste Committee-reports to Selectboard
  • 4 bailers, 3 phase power-bail paper, don’t mix plastics, clear better price, colored is dropped at another transfer station
  • Capability store material such as paper,
  • Hauling costs have gone up and will continue to, so keeping costs down can only come from having less solid waste and finding markets for recycling
  • Mandatory use of clear plastic bags

Kelly will contact Hancock

  1. Discussed the possibility of meeting with Hancock and Greenfield in the future since they have similar populations.

  1. It was determined that it would be necessary for Jamie to attend our next meeting to provide guidance around the responsibilities of the SWC before we begin work on the 3-5 year plan.

  1. The next meeting date will be determined after we find out about Jamie’s availability. Tuesday is the night that the SWC members can attend and the earliest that a meeting can take place is 5:30 PM.

Adjournment at 6:35 PM
Respectively submitted,
Kelly B. Marshall
